When birds don’t fly

Rainbow Lorikeet

Sometimes birds stop flying and end up in unexpected places.

This Rainbow Lorikeet was lying on our cobblestone laneway this morning, still and alone.

We don’t hear birds often in this part of the city. I think he was on his way to Flagstaff Gardens where there are more trees to sing from.

He’s so pretty even in death that I wanted to reach out and stroke him.

We walked on.

Update 22/09/2015: A friend alerted me to the problem of many lorikeets dying around North Melbourne (where we are) and some eastern suburbs of Melbourne, due to hand-feeding. Read more on Vic Gov’s website.
